BMT Annual review 2024

STEM: Shipping 2050 We partnered with My Future My Choice and WingTek to develop a STEM workshop to promote the maritime industry to the future generation. Students were invited onboard the MV Balmoral in Bristol Harbour to attend workshops where they built their model of the MV Balmoral. Throughout the workshops, students were introduced to key statistics around the significance of shipping and why the development of energy-saving technologies is important for tackling climate resilience. The students were then tasked with converting their model ships into a sustainable vessel of the future to set sail in 2050. The students added innovative design features such as hydroponics for growing food, kite sails and rotating cylinder for wind propulsion and air lubrication technology for reducing hull friction. The workshop is being well received and is now being developed further to introduce the SS Freshspring Trust as a delivery partner. The SS Freshspring Trust is a registered charity based in North Devon, dedicated to restoring the SS Freshspring, a historic steamship. The Trust’s mission is to preserve the past to inspire future generations, making them a perfect fit for this educational initiative. Design by children from Bristol Cathedral Choir School. (above) Our communities We are committed to supporting local communities through charitable donations, partnerships, volunteering, and sponsorships. Currently, we offer employee volunteering as a benefit in the UK and plan to expand this initiative globally in 2025. In FY 2024, employees worldwide contributed to local river and beach cleanups, partnered with EWB Australia to provide the Lama Lama indigenous community with access to clean drinking water, and participated in fundraisers for The Seafarers charity, supporting those who work or have worked at sea and their families. BMT Giveback: Port Stewart Sustainable Water Supply Project We are supporting the remote Lama Lama community in Australia to access clean, safe drinking water. This initiative enhances the health and well-being of the community and enables the Lama Lama Rangers to continue caring for their traditional homelands. Port Stewart, a remote community 600km from Cairns, is located on land owned by and returned to the Lama Lama people in 1992, following their forced removal in the 1960’s. Since re-establishment, the liveability and economic growth of the Port Stewart community has been limited due to restricted access to clean, safe water from the Stewart River (its sole water source) due to high levels of heavy metal contamination, high seasonal river flow, offgrid power limitations, and extreme weather conditions, Currently, water is transported to the community using temporary tankers — an unsustainable solution that impacts daily life, and it is not suitable for rangers and the community to live and work on Country in the long term. Our support is helping to develop an interim rainwater harvesting system for the community. This will provide water supply for essential use to support rangers and the community to live and work on Country. On-site implementation began in December 2024, with foundational work for the tank installation completed before the onset of the wet season. “When Lama Lama families are back on Country it makes them very happy, like very proud ... makes them all healthier. We want to have a better, healthy, growing community - and the main thing is our water source, it has to be better, with good water, like in the city ... but it’s going to take time and money. It’s a big problem.” Elaine Liddy, (Yintjingga, Aboriginal Corporation Cultural Officer) In Singapore, employees participated in a hike in the Bukit Timah Nature Reserve to raise awareness of mental health and improve well-being. Employees successfully summited the highest hill in Singapore. (right) The final installation of the rainwater harvesting system is scheduled for April 2025, alongside water quality testing to ensure safety and sustainability. In April, once the wet season has passed, the final phase of the rainwater harvesting tank installation will be completed. We look forward to joining the project partners in a community workshop to finalise the water management plans and plan the next stage. The impact of the Port Stewart Sustainable Water Supply project – which has been enabled by BMT – will support the Lama Lama community to live and thrive on their traditional homelands. With a safe and secure water supply in Port Stewart, improved health and well-being outcomes are possible. Access to clean water on Country will also support Lama Lama Rangers to care for their traditional homelands and implement community projects.
